COMPETITION CRISIS, WHAT CRISIS?
Up to 10 Short plays
WINTER COMPETITION: CRISIS, WHAT CRISIS?This competition requires writers [P-P members only, please] to construct a drama in which the principal player faces a crisis, real or imagined, international or domestic, and manages to resolve it satisfactorily within the time allowed. The reading time must not exceed ten minutes or fall short of five, on pain of disqualification; and it should include all Stage Directions and introductions. Scripts should include a list of characters (with ages) and there must be speaking parts for at least one male and one female actor. Scripts, one for each player (including someone to read directions) plus one extra, must be delivered to Fiona McGee by Monday 12 March 2012 or, by arrangement with her, by email to fibat@hotmail.com by the same date. The scripts are not to be rehearsed but the cast may discuss the script with each other on the night and raise any questions with Fiona (but not the author who must remain anonymous). Author’s name should be disclosed to Fiona, but not included on the scripts.
Only the first ten entries to be received will be accepted for the competition but we may be able to arrange readings of surplus scripts on another occasion. Casting and distribution of scripts will take place on Monday 19 March 2012 Actors line up then if you would like a part; or get an email off to Fiona [or telephone her on 07919 208212].
THE COLLABORATIVE WRITING GROUP A novel and important development in 2011 has been the establishment in July of a collaborative writing project. A group of writers led by Mary Conway and Roger Mayhew came together to discuss possible ideas for collaborative writing. They were later joined by actor members who then worked with the writers - through a series of script reading and improvisation sessions at the Green Man - to develop 7 new plays. What a result! The emerging plays will be brought to the Monday evening readings at various stages during 2012 possibly as early as 12 and 19 March (see above). It is anticipated that some will go on to production at fringe festivals. This ambitious project has been successful on several levels: it extends and diversifies the work of Player-Playwrights and provides a great opportunity for writers and actors to enhance their skills and experiences as they work together on structure, dialogue and characterisations outside the Monday night meetings. 25 members have been involved so far and more are pressing forward. Mary and Roger deserve warm congratulations for their hard work on a brilliant idea. They are not yet totally exhausted so if you would like to join them contact either Mary (mary.conway3@btinternet.com ) or Roger (rogermayhewplays@yahoo.co.uk )
